St. Pauli, Hamburg PDF Print E-mail

St. Pauli has a long tradition as a recreation and amusement centre. The big port of Hamburg led many sailors to Hamburg who preferably spent their spare time (as long as their ships were unloaded and loaded again) in this area. Since then there has been prostitution in St. Pauli. And it is still best known as Hamburg's red-light district. Although this is wrong, the so called red-light district is an area of a few streets around the street Reeperbahn often referred to as the Kiez. Bars and music clubs have a tradition in the Kiez St. Pauli. The Beatles lived in St. Pauli and played at the Star-Club before becoming famous. Singer and actor Hans Albers is strongly associated with St. Pauli, providing the neighbourhood's unofficial anthem, with "Auf der Reeperbahn Nachts um Halb Eins." (On the Reeperbahn half past midnight) from the movie "Große Freiheit Nr. 7".

Everyone seems to be making the most of the last chance to go ashore here in Hamburg. The double-decked bus that is taking crew who opted to visit Seaman’s Center was packed to full capacity that a second bus was arranged to pick the remaining crew who did not managed to fit in the first shuttle from Blohm and Voss Shipyard to the Seaman’s Center. I wasn’t able to visit Seaman’s Center (even for once) as the times for the scheduled shuttle pick up from the dockyard did not fit into any of my free times. Some of the crew decided to go for a warmer evening around Hamburg’s popular night spot, which I believe they had a night to remember. I don’t know how but I am pretty sure it was one glamorous night for them. I am not among them that’s for sure…LOL… I am not a night stroller actually. During the day, I may be ashore when off duty wandering around fulfilling my hobby - photography.

Talking about going ashore, well I’ve been out twice only. Of course, it was a fantastic day for a foreigner like me wandering around the streets of St. Pauli. At least I can call myself a “foreigner” here…LOL… It’s my first time here in Hamburg so I did have fantastic moments wandering around the streets watching in awe with all these structures bearing a taste of German architecture dominating around every corner here in St. Pauli, one of Hamburg’s significant districts. The buildings here suggest a very impressive view in which the Germans can call their very own architectural trademark. Most of these buildings are business establishments to include several restaurants, snack bars, souvenir shops, coffee shops and inns among many others.

Sex shops selling adult toys obviously still a controversial thing especially in the Philippines, but here in Hamburg (as well as in most western nations), finding an adult shop is just part of the norms. I am a McDonalds’, KFC, Pizza Hut and Burger King patron back in Philippines, so when I found them right here in St. Pauli, Hamburg as well, I realized that I am not too distant from home after all. To be fair with my gastronomic sense, I sneaked into one of this popular fast-food here. Guess where? If KFC was in your mind at first hand, congratulations! You are an excellent mind reader….hehehe…
